Commercial Music
February 3, 2004

Back in January, I posted a blog about trying to find a song that was in a Mitsubishi Galant commercial. In the process of trying to find the song, I ended up entering a contenst on Mitsubishi's website to win $25,000. While registering for the contest, the website informed me that if I test drove a new Galant I'd get a $25 American Express gift card for free. Always game for free money, I went to my local Mitsu dealership, drove the car, and picked up a "test drive kit" that was supposed to have the gift card in it. It did, but it also had a CD inside, called "Mitsubishi Mix Vol. 2". Guess what was on the CD? The song from the Galant commercial that piqued my curiosity in the first place. Turns out it was a beautiful song by The Flaming Lips, "Do You Realize?"

Since posting that blog, a huge number of people have found my blog by searching on Google for songs that were on Mitsubishi commercials. It seems not many geeks have discovered the Mitsubishi Mix CD and subsequently post the information on the Internet. Being both sufficiently geeky and being so highly ranked on google, I feel it is my duty to post as much information as I can find on this topic. So, to start us off, here's a track list from the CD I got, and as much detail as I can find about which song goes with which commercial:

1 - Eclipse: "Days Go By" by Dirty Vegas
On this commercial, there's a group of twenty-somethings in the car, driving around some big city, with the girl in the front seat doing the weirdest, creepiest groovin' I've ever seen. It's like a mix of hip-hop and the robot dance.

2 - Montero Sport: "The Name of the Game" by Crystal Method
No clue about this one, sorry. Nice song, though. If you know which commercial matches this song, please send me an email.

3 - Outlander: "Breathe" by Telepopmusik
There's a guy driving the Outlander and the passengers keep changing. (Thanks to David for this description!)

4 - Endeavor: "Horndog" by Overseer
According to David, this song accompanied a whole series of Endeavor commercials.

5 - Galant: "Crankdown Lion" by Machine Head
Don't know about this one either. Again, if you know, send me an email.

6 - Lancer Evolution: "Low Fashion Lovers" by Clone Defects
Don't have details on this one, sorry.

7 - Lancer: "Positive Contact" by Deltron 3030
Again, don't know squat. Do you?

8 - Galant: "Do You Realize" by The Flaming Lips
This was what started it all for me: this commercial features a Galant, driving down a city street, and a bunch of strangers keep waving at the car. It then turns out that they were waving at an incredibly cute boy in the back seat of the car.

And Now for a Few Other Commercials with Music I Quite Enjoy

- Dockers: "Tropicando" by Thievery Corporation
This one was on a few years ago, but it has to be one of my favorite commercials ever. It's about a very dapper looking young man (of course, wearing dockers) and his knock-out gorgeous blonde girlfriend, going to the girlfriend's house for dinner so the man can meet her folks. Turns out both the mother and the sister are also drop-dead bombshells. Suddenly, while eating dinner, the man feels someone playing footsie with him under the table. He looks around the table to figure out who it is, and to his shock and surprise, it turns out it's the dapper father, feeling the dockers pant leg with his toes. Then, of course, they freeze on the man's shocked face, and the infamous "Nice Pants" line comes up on the screen. Ah, comedic goodness...

- Target: "Anything You Want" by Roy Orbison
What can I say? So I like the song... and I also think it's quite clever how Target tends to cross-pollinate their advertising by including multiple products in one commercial in very cute, stylish ways.

Got any commercial music knowledge you'd like to share? Email it to me and I'll post it here.
